Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Bow, blow kisses, and leave.

wait till they stop clapping and come up with two more sentences.

If it sounds negative, be courteous, say two more sentences and leave the stage!

Be serious..ha

smile at them, wave your hand... bow!

Flash a peace sign and run. ^^

I would be flattered. But I suppose if they continue for too long, I would just have to say something like," Enough already, have you never heard someone speak English before?"No I'm just joking...I would probably say " Thank you everyone, and then continue

I'd probably turn my face to the audience (breaking the 4th wall!!) and smile, and signal my finger in front of my lips - telling them to "sshhhhh... be quiet..." turned back and get back into the scene. I would not start my next line until the volume of the people have calm down. (don't wait until they're completed silent though)

Ideally, you "hold" for a few seconds before continuing and you say your next line a bit louder as a signal that the play is progressing and they will stop so that they can hear the dialogue. The situation you talk of is rare and I've only seen it once or twice: once when I was watching The Little Foxes in London and Elizabeth Taylor made her first entrance and the other was, ironically enough, in the same play but it was applause for Sada Thompson's monologue!
