Question:Ok, I just got an awesome role in a play, but the director told me to "play it sexy". I'm basically the villiness, a lawyer who is trying to get the main charector executed (and who suceeds) I don't know how to play this part sexy- I've played sluts and other parts like that, but this charector is to me, a serious one. What should I wear, to look professional, and yet still play the part? Also, how do I play a serious charector sexy?

I think you can play sexy without having to go into slutty territory or even adjusting your wardrobe. A well fitting power suit can be sexy without being obvious. I would actually avoid wearing a short skirt, low cut top, "too high" heels, etc. (obviously you can't be frumpy though - it will be essential to work with the costumer to find a good balance so you don't look like a hooker or a soccer mom. You can wear sexy underwear underneath or high shoes that are slightly covered by pants though to help get you into character). A high powered lawyer who uses her sexuality to minipulate people doesn't need those things - It's all in your attitude. This is a person who used sex to get what she wants so will be very confidant is the way she moves and speaks. If you can, drop your voice into a lower register (think Kathleen Turner). Don't be afraid to use physicality with your scene partners. Maybe she touches them at certain times to get her point across. Again, it doesn't have to be obvious - a hand on the arm that slowly trails down can be very sexy. When analyizing your scene and looking for character objectives, I imagine "to seduce" will probably come up a lot. Think about how that would be portrayed. Again, a lot of will come down to confidence and not being afraid to dominate.

Think about Mrs. Robinson from The Graduate or Portia de Rossi's character from Ally McBeal. Both strong women who use their sexuality to get what they want.
To get the dominant, confident aspect, think about strong female characters in films who are sexy without flaunting their sexuality - Sarah Connor in Terminator 2, Ripley in Aliens and Trinity in The Matrix. You're character might be more sexual than these characters, but when it comes to sexy, there's a big difference between a slutty, desperate quality and a sexual, confident quality.

Best of luck!! I've played characters similiar to what your character sounds like, and they are tons of fun!!

maybe like Samantha Jones or Carry Bradshaw on Sex and The City. You dont have to throw sex in your audience's face to be sexy. Just be a little flirty and a little promiscuous. I would watch sex and the city for inspiration. They are sexy and high powered. Do you have to wear a suit bc your playing a lawyer? If so wear a slightly low cut cami underneath. Wear heals that are a little "too" high. Wear a skirt that gives the idea of short without being short. Short but professional. If you dont need a costume, then just wear regular clothes.
