Well, going along with the "Moulin Rouge" theme, I would suggest "Cabaret", which I loved. Going along with the "simply good", here are a few of my other favorites:
RENT
Avenue Q
Les Miserables
A Chorus Line
Jesus Christ Superstar (I know...but it's actually really good!)
Rocky Horror (Picture) Show
West Side Story
Sweeney Todd
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
Company
Into the Woods
...Basically anything by Stephen Sondheim (after four, I am just giving up listing them all)
Hope you enjoy!

GREASE!!!!!
phantom of the opera
hairspray
mamamia

I've never seen Moulin Rouge, so I can't say what's like it, but here's a list of my favourite shows! Everything except West Side Story is NOT a movie musical....I don't like them, lol

The Phantom of the Opera
Sweeney Todd
Assassins
Into the Woods
Sunday in the Park With George
Hairspray
Wicked
West Side Story
Sunday in the Park With George
Avenue Q
Les Miserables

RENT.

I simply adore Moulin Rouge!, and I found "Across the Universe" to be very similar. But, all of the music in Universe is by the Beatles, whom I also love. It's very colorful like Moulin Rouge!, and lots of cool dancing and stuff. =)

Enjoy!

Stephen Sondheim does excellent work...Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods, and A Little Night Music are good choices.
Les Misérables is a great story and a quality musical.

And of course, The Producers is just fantastic. Who doesn't love Mel Brooks?

i havent seen that but Wicked is by far my Fav. Musical.
and Legally but..

Two of the best musicals I can suggest to you are THE COURT JESTER (Paramount Pictures-1955) starring Danny Kaye (too funny!) and THE KING AND I (20th Century-Fox-1956) starring Yul Brenner and Deborah Kerr (funny, poignant). Also anything with Judy Garland,Gene Kelly, and the Rogers-Astaire musicals. You can find their work on IMDB. Hope this helps you out.

Because of Moulin Rouge's almost ADD affect on the plot line with its variety of scene changes and jokes, I would highly recommend "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum." It is both comical and random - very similar to Moulin Rouge.
