ok i know the letters represent the strings the x's is where my fingers go. the x's are between lines. are the lines the frets. how do i know what strings are open and which i strumm? except for the x's of course.

c sharp is a bar chord- first finger bars all strings at the third fret and 3rd finger bars second,third and fourth strings at the 5th fret.

d chord is a simple chord, first finger on the third string second fret, second finger on the first string second fret and third finger on the second string at the third fret.
