Joining the union isn't contingent on earning a minimum salary. You must have worked on a professional production and be able to show proof. I looked around the UK Equity website and it doesn't go into any detail on what you actually need you join (ex. like the vouchers system in the US).
I would suggest contacting your local office and asking them directly what the requirements are. Also, despite the fact that equity negotiates minimum rates for it's members, it doesn't post them on the website. It says those can also be obtained from local offices for a small fee.

So, do yourself a favor and ignore all the SAG and Equity talk on these boards as it pertains to the US. The UK system is obviously different and you will just end up getting confused. Again, check with your local office.
