Do NOT write your own monologue; this is a very bad practice, and it comes off as being incredibly unprofessional. Also, what can make a monologue that you do very good is the writing: if you take a monologue from, say, a Tony Kushner play, oftentimes the writing is so good that it makes the monologue easy to do really well. Worse writing can make for worse performances.

Now, I am not implying that you will necessarily write a horrible monologue; it is simply likely that you have less experience (and, therefore, ability) than the great playwrights whose works you have access to. And, what's more, since a monologue from a play has its own context, its own character and dynamics between characters, a clear situation to work from, it forces you to already approach the monologue as you would if you were acting in a play (for one of the downfalls of many who perform monologues is looking at it as a different sort of acting from a play, a sort of recitation to the audience). This simply will not be the case for a monologue you write yourself.

Believe me, there are plenty of "original" monologues out there, nestled in plays. You just have to look for them. Start with plays you know and like; you can also check in monologue books, but be wary of overdone ones, and -- for the reasons noted above -- be sure to read the whole play.

Performing a monologue is not about showing you can stand up and speak clearly or convey emotion; it's about effectively bringing the playwright's words and the situation that exists in the play across to the audience. The text is essential.

Good luck!

Take something from your own life and talk about it. Be real. The idea to write your own is a good start right there. Let the audience feel as though you're giving them a confidence (a secret) even if you're not. Let your monologue reveal something about yourself they might not have known. It will be remembered.

ok... well first off think of a catagory...
Comic or tragic or angry or bratty
then think of a conflict and just talk about it

Well I wrote a monologue by myself, about me killing and tying up someone. So it neccessarily doesn't have to be an experience you've had although it does help. Now think of something you can write about, sorta like a paper, and just think of a 1 min summary.

Maybe it can be Dramatic, Comedy, Dramedy, any style you want.
Now write about something like if your parenst had a divorce write about that or for comedy if youhave a whole bunch of friends and they make funof you about you liking dolls write about that.
Something that has happened to you is great to write about, or make something up also, I mean Im 14 as well nd I sure have never killed no one, but i wrote a monologue about it.
So just use your imagination
