I wish you luck - my acting teacher never allowed us to do anything from Lillian Hellman stuff.

The play is about an ambitious woman, Regina Giddons, who when she can't get what she wants from her sickly husband, refuses to give him his medicine (he's in a wheelchair) and he dies. The line is something like "I hope you die. I hope you die real soon. I'll be waitin' for you to die." She's pretty bad and her brothers are horrific as well. They're a family of deceitful cheats.

Alexandra has always hated the family's lack of morality but she is not of an age yet when she can leave. In the end, Regina realizes that her own brothers intend to swindle her out of a deal they made. She plans to go to Chicago to talk to "Mr. Marshall," a man she believes is interested in her, to thwart her brothers. Alexandra and Ben both believe Horace was murdered by Regina. After Ben leaves, Regina commands Alexandra (Zan) to accompany her to Chicago, then relents, not wanting to force her. She almost timidly inquires if Zan would like to sleep in her room. Zan, seeing a new side of her mother, asks,“Are you afraid, Mama?” Regina is indeed alone.

You need to read the play before doing a monologue.
