Position:Home>Theater & Acting> How did Hermia change?

Question:After Puck stuffed up with the love potion and made Demetrius AND Lysander fall in love with Helena, Hermia seemed to act a bit differently. Do you think she changed? Was she like, self-conscious or something? She seems more weak, even desperate. Perhaps a parallel to Helena's character? Can someone please help me figure this out? Much appreciated (:

(By the way, this is about Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream)

Unfortunately all of my Shakespeare is packed away at the moment so I can't give any specific examples, but Hermia definately did change. She has suddenly been put in exactly the same position Helena was in to begin with - the man she loves is proclaiming his love for someone else. Not only that, but the man that was always chasing her is suddenly chasing that very same girl. And on top of that, the girl in question is her best friend so she thinks her best friend is betraying her by trying to steal the man she loves. That's enough to make anyone desperate and insecure. Love makes people desperate, especially when there is a fear that that love is unrequited. She had gone to sleep next to a man that she loved and loved her, thinking they were going to spend the rest of their lives together, then when she wakes up he's disappeared and she finds him trying to woo Helena. When Hermia asks him what's going on, he insults her. She's confused and heartbroken, and it shows in the way she acts, no longer composed, fighting with Helena.

I'm not sure if this is the sort of thing you were after but I hope it helped.

EDIT
I'm not sure if you can really say it was a bad thing - she demonstrated less desirable qualities, but it was a natural reaction to a really confusing situation. I guess if you're meaning her personality change then I would say she didn't really go through a major change like that. She was still the same, but she was just in a situation we hadn't seen her in before so it made her *act* very differently.
It sort of depends on the entirety of your argument and what you would mean by a 'bad thing'. It's a bad thing in the sense that it is a negative change, but it's not a bad thing in the sense that it was just a natural reaction and she herself did not really change. I don't think I'm making much sense, but I hope you get what I mean about her changing yet not changing. If not just let me know and I'll try to clarify it better.
