What happened to Fiyero in Wicked?

Question:I've never seen the play but I listen to the soundtrack a lot. Does he die before the No Good Deed song? And if he didn't what happened to him?
And if he lived why does Elphaba think he's died?

Okay, you asked for it: in No Good Deed, Elphaba, as you can hear at the beginning, casts a spell on Fiyero - actually, quite clever, if you listen to the lyrics in context.

Let his flesh not be torn
Let his blood leave no stain
Though they beat him, let him feel no pain

Let his bones never break, ect.

What she's actually doing is casting a spell which turns him into the Scarecrow. Quite a plot twist, I know.

At the end, Elphaba more or less lies when she recieves a note from him, implying to Glinda that he's dead. Instead, at the end, he comes out and lets her out of the trap door, where she's been hiding since she pretended to melt.

In the original novel by Gregory Maguire Fiyero is killed by the Wizard's guards and Elphaba tries to talk about her guilt feelings to his widow, who won't listen. And unlike the show, she is killed during the melting.
