Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Is there any other way to find drama work other than getting an agent?

Question:I love acting. I'm 13 and want to be an actress when I'm older. My parent won't let me get an agent because they dont want me missin school but is there any other good way to find decent safe work. I've tried www.starnow.com and looked in the stage paper but havent found anything for my age range. Please help? I already go to as many drama groups as possible I am looking more for auditions.

Any tips? Please help xx

hey, i'm a 13 year old actress, too! that is not true that if you get an agent, you'll miss school, but to find work other than getting an agent, listen up:
-for theatre work, go to your local theatres and churches to audition for plays
-for film/television, and other auditions (which are harder to find on your own) look at actorsaccess.com and myactingagent.com
-you should take an acting class at a local theatre before auditioning. casting directors like training.
-do your research and read, read, read!
i recommend Act Now! by peter jazwinski or another acting book
-don't forget about monologues for auditions (and a resume and headshot)
-good luck!

For now, you should concentrate on getting as much acting experience as you can. That means plays at your school, plays at community theatres and summer theatres in your area, even plays at local colleges. (They'll be casting mostly their own students, but every so often they might be looking for a younger actress to play a role in your age range.) All of that stuff might seem to you to be a long way from the stardom you're seeking, but the more stage experience you have on your resume, the more agents and casting directors will be interested in you in years to come.
