I'd say, listen to the opening notes of the song, listen to the closing notes of the song (if they sound strained, disregard that). or listen to, like, a note held really long by the singer. once you get that, just put those 3 notes into a category. Theres your answer!

if you know yours, you can measure against that.

All you have to do is listening to the highest note they can sing, and then the lowest note and go from there. However this contains lots of skill with tone and your ear must be able to pick up differents tones. To practise, I would say learn piano, it really helps.

Hope this is what you were looking for.

Well in opera a characters part in the play denotes his or her vocal range.
Bass- usually a father figure or someone of political importance
Baritone- a father figure or predominate male not engaged with the female of desire
Tenor- the young male courting the female
Contralto- The mother figure
Mezzasoprano- Mother figure or older sister
Soprano- the female of desire
Castrato- young brother usually performed by a female

Bass-lowest male voice
Baritone- mid male voice
Tenor- highest male voice
Contralto- lowest female voice
Mezzasoprano- mid female voice
Soprano- highest female voice
Castrato- is actually a boy that is castrated before puberty as to retain an abnormally high voice which is tonally superior to any female soprano voice. they are very rare today
Hope that helps
