Question Home

Position:Home>Theater & Acting> What should you major in when you want to become an actress?

Question:In college, not something you'd actually do but a back-up or something.
:)
Oh, and how long should you try to make an acting career for before you should move on and give up, is 30 a good number, or too late to get your life back on track?
Also, what are the odds of getting an agent?, and how hard is it really?

Thanks in advance. :D

From what I know, you won't necessarily get a solid training in acting with a theatre or some sort of theatrical arts degree. I believe a lot of the time is also spent on theatre history, literature etc. Acting is one of those areas that definitely doesn't REQUIRE a degree. It can't hurt though. Just learn your craft and work on it continuously. Also as far as a time frame, sorry to say it but- If you are thinking about a time frame then it might not be the right thing to pursue. Its one of those things that you have to be in for the long haul, otherwise you probably won't find it very fullfilling or successful. It usually takes a long time to get a career started up. In fact even in Hollywood they say to be prepared to be there for several years before you start seeing some success (if you get it at all) There are also a lot of actors who make a lot of money with commercial acting. Union commercials pay very well. Its what everyone tries to use to support themselves with until a theatrical career starts to pick up.

BFA in Acting, though it would be for Stage mostly... if you want to be in movies or on TV you need to go to a 2 year school like AMDA or The School of Film and Television.

but if you want to be in Theatre then I would go to a university and get a BFA in Acting, you could get one in theatre but it is really up to you.

Now about the Agent thing... I do not know?
About the giving up thing... NEVER GIVE UP!

Please whatever you do, do not get an acting or theater degree at uni. It's a waste of money and time and you'll end up selling used cars.
