Actors want to work and will take any job if they're just starting out or, if they can afford to be more selective, will take a job that interests them. I don't know if you're talking about people who are made up to be fat and/or ugly or people who seem unattractive or overweight playing a fat and/or ugly person.

Type in actors is very important, and working actors know what their "type" is. If they're overweight, they know that's the type of role they will be cast in, and if they don't want to be, they'll lose weight and change their type. It's the same with people who have a more character face (that is, they don't look like movie stars). They know the kind of roles they will be cast in, and they accept it.

I do think you have to have a good sense of yourself and a strong ego to see it as just a job and not a reflection of the kind of person you are or how you're perceived by those who care about you.

$$$

I imagine a nice paycheck is a useful incentive..just like in any job...don't you think?

Besides...they're actors...if they're a good actor-they like a challenge of playing something other than they are....like a mean bad guy--if they're really nice.

Or perhaps they are aware of their looks--and play on them--so as to earn the coveted cool paycheck.

Bottom line--they get to play pretend..for money. So why not? Wouldn't you?

they say, "You'll be on TV!!!"-- ;-)

Actors either like to play a variety of roles and show their depth, or settle into a character type and become a "character actor". Either way they're happy to get paid; acting is usually a series of temp jobs and doesn't guarantee food on the table......

There is no convincing. Acting is a disease. If you have the disease, you'll take any part just for the sake of being on stage. Acting becomes an obsession for most of us. It doesn't matter what the part is, what matters is that you're out there acting.
