Wherever your voice is at its most resonant and easily-projectable is where your real range is. If you're an alto, you can't get very high above middle C at all but you can generally sing a tenor's part. If you're a mezzo, you can go fairly high and fairly low, and maybe belt a bit, but neither extremes. If you're a soprano, then you can sing possibly two octaves above middle C, but have trouble projecting and maintaining a resonant sound with low notes. Hope it helped!

When I took voice lessons, this is how they did it:

An Instructor sat at the piano, and started with Middle C.
She then asked me to sing each note up the scale from there, until we found out which notes were comfortable, and which were at the end of my range (and then out of that range).

Then she started at middle C again, and we worked down the scale until we found the bottom range.

Then we looked at the top, middle (comfortable) and upper notes and compared them to the standard ranges to find "my" range.

Please note: be careful that you don;'t hurt yourself by trying to sing too high or low beyond your range. Also, watch the volume: you should not need to force the note, if you do, there is probably something wrong w/ it.

Are you taking lessons? It might help to have someone with a good "ear" to help you find the pitches. Just remember to tell them if you feel any discomfort while singing.

Good luck!
