For a successful performance, do not think about yourself, but think as the character
To get into character, just stop thinking about anything other than receiving the stimuli of the scene and then simply respond to it as the character
If you are doing what an actor is supposed to do, you will cry when the character is supposed to cry. Now to learn what an actor is supposed to do you are going to have to read a book (Either Acting for the Camera by Tony Barr or The Tao of Acting by Dr. Kenneth Plonkey) The latter is the shorter and easier to read. For ordering info, read my profile and write to me at my aol address. The Tao of Acting also covers stage presence, which is achieved by the energy the actor exudes on stage. To project, first you have to speak very clearly. That is more important than speaking loudly. Always aim your performance at the back of the theatre.

I'm an independent film director.

I'm sorry if you don't want to put in the effort to even read a book, but acting is HARD.
It's not something that is so easy, that you're going to master the above two things you mentioned, from just one Yahoo answers question!!!
You're being too lazy to be anything remotely close to a decent actor.

Read "An Actor Prepares" by Stanislavski. That's my best advice.
And yes, get a teacher as well. You wouldn't think you could prepare to be a dentist or a even a plumber without doing some reading and being taught, would you?

You seriously underestimate the craft of acting.

Since you asked for performance and not audition some suggestions may vary, but as far as crying goes, there isn't one general tip that will work, basically practice, if you can have someone watch you practice and "Direct you" presence for me came naturally so I don't knwo taht to tell you there.

Projection is simple to do ,but difficult to remember. basically you want to throw your voice out there. push it. From the diapragm. #1 thing projection does not equal loud. Also study people you believe to be good actors emulate that ability until you perfect in in yourself.

For Acting, I would recommend
