Go to the local newspaper and ask for whoever does the entertainment reporting, or community events. They will know who to contact for the local theater group. Then contact the group and ask when the next tryout is for a production. Most local groups would welcome any help they can get...costumes, backstage, painting sets...as well as actors. Have fun!

Find a community theatre and participate. Take any job and get acquainted.

Just look it up; I don't think there's any one clearing house of community theatres (though I could be wrong).

See if they're having auditions and go try out. It might be best to volunteer first--usher, box office, help out around the theatre, get to know folks.

The local newspapers usually run audition notices for community theater. Read what the audition requirements are and if you feel you can fit the part, show up for the audition. Some audition notices are more specific about what they want from you. You may need to have a prepared monologue or a song or be prepared to dance, if it's a musical. If that's what is required, be ready. Don't waste the director's time by not knowing your pieces. Be pleasant. Give it your best shot and wait to hear from them.

You can also do a google search for your area. Many community theatres have websites and will post audition notices and their season.
