My choices for the most part are up and comers except for the obvious few. They are very good young actors that bear watching...

Hamlet- Cillian Murphy-he has a very earnest, honest face and he has a fragile, lost quality, all angst with the hollow cheekbones!

. King Claudius- Jeremy Irons- He is the quintessental villian. There is a sleek slyness about him that i love and his voice sets me aquiver.

Queen Gertrude- Helen Mirren...I just love her...she is amazing

Polonius -Hugh Laurie-He has so much depth and the intelligence in his face...plus he can do "wry" like no one else

Laertes-Jonathan Rhys Meyers-A very good actor has a shadowyness to him that is more mysterious to me than Cillian- who seems haunted.

Ophelia-Romola Garai-She is delicate and fragile and has a luminious quality to her.

Horatio-James McAvoy, clean cut sensible looking, has a range of depth, good character actor

For the ghost of Hamlets father-Pete Postalwait-great charactor actor

I would try for a cast that was up to the job as actors and who could also attract a little box office. But I would not want top box office names as they would tend to overwhelm the production.
Assuming it was a movie, I would want someone youthful and handsome with top acting ability to play Hamlet. The late Heath Ledger would have been a great choice. So would Colin Farrell. I would go with Adrian Brody for the part. He's the wrong physical type but he has all the right intensity and dreamy brooding qualities.
Casting King Claudius is easy. Sir Anthony Hopkins plays flawed evil very well. His Queen, Gertrude, would be well served by another Oscar winner, Jessica Lange. Polonius is serio-comic, both wise and a fool. I would like Jim Broadbent for that role.
Polonius' son should be someone comparable in age to Hamlet who would look plausible in the climactic swordplay. Joaquin Phoenix would make an interesting Laertes. Ophelia, Hamlet's love interest and Polonius' other child, must go convincingly mad. If you've seen Fight Club or Sweeney Todd, the casting of Helena Bonham Carter is a no-brainer.
Horatio, Hamlet's best friend and straight man --and the only principal character still standing at the end of the play-- needs a likable actor of comparable age. It would be nice to get Orlando Bloom for that role. The Ghost of Hamlet's Father is a small and juicy role. Veteran British thespian Bill Nighy would fill the part nicely.
Those are the leads, and I think we can leave the rest to the casting director...

I think Hamlet is one of the most boring plays of all time, what with the young prince of Denmark spending most of the three hours bloviating about what he thinks he should do. Please give me a play with more action and less monologue!

But OK, if you're paying me to cast the thing, I'm going to try to liven it up:

Hamlet: Martin Short
Claudius: Steve Martin
Ophelia: Nancy Cartwright (using her Bart Simpson voice)
Gertrude: Jane Curtin
Polonius: Mandy Patinkin (using his Inigo Rodriguez voice)
Rosencranz and Guiderstern: any two actors who could recreate Will Farrell and Dana Carvey's "Hans und Franz" schtick.
Fortinbras: Eddie Murphy

and for the grave digger I would want Billy Crystal to reprise his performance from the movie.

There, that oughtta sink it.
