Kids really like what's familiar, so the easiest thing to do would be to take some common fairy tales and let them act them out. They would already know most of the dialogue, so lines would be easy to learn. You could use The Three Little Pigs, Goldilocks, Red Riding Hood, etc. You could have one kid who's a good reader (if anyone can read!) be the narrator. So you could do several short plays rather than one long one. If you like, you can put in some music using songs most kids know like Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf or let them sing along to a recoding like the old sixties song "Little Red Riding Hood" or just throw in some songs that have some kind of connection to the story. I would really focus on making it easy and fun.

It really depends on what length of show you are looking to do and how many parts you need. If the kids you are working with are all five you will want to keep it very simple. Choral work is best for this age group. Story books they are familiar with adapted into a script work nicely. If you have five year olds as well as older kids you can begin to look at more complicated scripts like, "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown" or "Charlotte's Web" but if the kids are all five you will really want to stick to a shorter script that predominantly has sections where the kids speak together or has a lot of repetitive lines that they will quickly become comfortable with. At that age you will have a few strong readers as well as some kids who are not shy and capable of strong projection. But most kids at five are still shaky readers and a bit reluctant to take the spotlight. However give them something to read all together and most kids will burst out of their shell and speak as loud as you need them to. There is comfort in numbers at that age.

Good luck.
