Any ideas where to start?

Most of us ( I only did 50 plays so I may not be as experienced as other members who answer this question).

Most ofus began by joining a local little theatre group where we did improvs and were taught thratre basics by the artistic director.

Eventually (3 months or more) we were given the opportunity to audition for a play, ususally for a one act festival.

Clever artistic directors will first cast you in small walk-on parts, requiring no dialogue but allowing you to "know" stage protocol (don't lean on the furniture, learn to put your hands where they won't interfere with your action, learn that acting is also interacting" with other actors, learn how to really listen, learn the eloquence of silence, all that sort of good stuff.

Then in the next few months you may be given speaking roles where you can hone your craft, learn how to modulate your voice, learn how to make a "whisper" be heard in the back rown, learn how to get appaluse for a "stage-off", all that good stuff.

By this time you will either like theatre or not. And if you do then which direction will you go.

If you are really keen on becoming an actor it is important to
(1) learn how to tap dance
(2) learn how to juggle

This may amaze you but top actors have told me ths over and over. It seems to open doors somehow. And it has worked for Tom Hanks and many many noted actors.

So join a group and break a leg .

start by building a resume by joining community theater

I need help with that, too!! But, this is what I've heard: Taking acting classes and acting at your school/church/local theater are the best ways to gain experience and will make it easier to get an agent. I think some acting classes will help you get jobs, but it depends. If you have a local theater, DO IT!! I might start at mine, but I dont have any experience and they are very serious over there. Practice, study, and learn! Then, get an agent. You can search on Google or Yahoo! for good agents...If you want to be in movies, go to Hollywood! If you want to be in plays and musicals, go to New York. Just get out there and make yourself known!!
