Any actor looking to act in movies is in SAG. It's a union and studios only hire SAG actors. I'm not sure of the cost to join, but I know you have to have performed a speaking part in a film, or you have to have been featured in someway, in order to join. Whenever you see an actor in a movie who says, like, one line ("May I take you order"?, etc.), you can tell yourself , he just got his SAG card. :) Once you've said a line, too, you are featured in the credits and you have something for your resume. It's silly, but every little role has the possibility of opening a door to another. It's a pretty crazy world!! I tried it a for a few years and decided it wasn't for me. And I never got my SAG card.

I believe it's the union that the actors belong to.

are you talking about the SAG awards?? Actors pick their favorite actors to win awards. basically like the Oscars or any other award show.

The Screen Actors' Guild is the union for film actors. SAG protects the rights of film actors -- getting them good pay and good job conditions - and tries to protect them from being exploited in any way by any other random guy with a camera.

It is NOT an agency -- it doesn't try to get you work, it just tries to make sure that the work that you DO get won't overwork you.

If it's anything like the theater actor's union, you probably can walk off the street and join, but it would cost a ton of money, and there is no guarantee you would be able to get any work if you're a member.

The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) is an American labor union representing over 120,000 film and television principal performers and background performers worldwide.

The Guild was founded in 1933 in an effort to eliminate exploitation of actors in Hollywood who were being forced into oppressive multi-year contracts with the major movie studios that did not include restrictions on work hours or minimum rest periods, and often had clauses that automatically renewed at the studios' discretion. These contracts were notorious for allowing the studios to dictate the public and private lives of the performers who signed them, and most did not have provisions to allow the performer to end the deal.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards are an annual award given by the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) to recognize outstanding performances by members.

SAG Awards have been one of the major awards events in Hollywood since 1995. Nominations for the awards come from 4200 randomly selected members of the union, with the full membership (120,000 as of 2007) available to vote for the winners.

SAG, the Screen Actors Guild, is a labor union whose main purpose is to negotiate the best possible pay and working environment for professional actors of every age. Their website is here: http://www.sag.org

Information for actors under age 18 is here: http://www.sag.org/kids

It's not free nor is it easy to join. If you're eligible, it costs thousands of dollars to join. A performer becomes eligible to join under one of the following two conditions: (1) proof of employment in a SAG-authorized production or (2) At least one year as a member of an affiliated performers’ union and at least one job under the authority of that union.
