Some group auditions, which bring together representatives from maybe 50-100 theatre companies so that actors can audition for all of them simultaneously, charge registration fees in the $30-50 range. Those fees are perfectly legitimate, since it's expensive for organizers to arrange those group auditions.

It's not legitimate for an agent or an individual company to charge actors for auditioning. Legitimate agents make their money by taking a percentage of your earnings from the jobs they help you find, not by charging you up-front fees.

You do not buy your way into a career. It takes years of training and experience. Until you have that forget about a Talent Agent (what they are called). Auditions which cost something are a rip off unless it is a fee to belong to a club or organization. Stay away from the web, it is full of scams.
