I actually like the early Elvis - and I believe that Elvis was always an artist. He didn't have a big musical education, but he had an innate sense of what he wanted to do musically, and he always ran the recording sessions. I like the early Elvis because of his enormous energy. When you see clips of him on, for instance, the Ed Sullivan Show, you can see that the stage could not hold him, he was such a dynamo.

I think a low period for Elvis was while he was making his post-Army movies, although certainly some big hits came out of the films. But as they went on, he was more resentful of them.

The '69 special was a highlight of Elvis' career. The producers wanted a Christmas song and Elvis insisted on doing "If I Can Dream," and he was fabulous. He realized then that he had to go back to live performing. I think the special was the ultimate Elvis.

What do I think about Elvis? He was an enormously gifted man whose influence continues to be felt. As fantastic as his career was, had he left the Colonel when he returned from the Army, it could have been even better - better films and perhaps European and Asian tours - the Colonel didn't have a passport, so Elvis didn't work overseas.

Few people realize that Elvis was a virtual slave of the Hilton hotel because of the Colonel. The Colonel was a compulsive gambler and he used to have his debts taken out of Elvis' deal, which meant that Elvis had to keep working there to pay off the Colonel's debts.

So in summary, I think Elvis was always a great artist in his heart, and I think he peaked in 1969 and 1970 with his special and his initial appearances in Vegas.

His best period was between 1960 and 1965 .That was a clean period when he was on the continous rise. After he peaked, came the fall.
What did you like about Elvis? Everything.

I think 1989 was his finest year. It was the year he released Golden Hits from Elvis the Knig [sic] on the Overwaitea Budget label. Classic album, probably his best. I paid $1.97 for mine and got The Best of Bob and Doug thrown in for half price.

Elvis was always awesome!
