If you look inside your Playbill in very fine print (I can't remember which page) it states "All money collected at this performance will go directly to Broadway Cares/EFA".

I'm sure the amount is minimal, if any and I think sometimes people just put random things in their pocket in there or something may already be planted in the hats. I dont think the audience expects to actually put money in there, but it's funny to see Gary coleman curse audience members for being cheapasses.

I've seen it in New York, and on tour in San Francisco, and both times, they improvise a joke with an item given to them that's something like (in my experience) NYC Metrocard or a BART card.
