Position:Home>Theater & Acting> Help me pursue my dream, I'm sure you can help!?

Question:Hi, well I'm in my last year of highschool (so that makes me 15 years old) and my dream is to act. I haven't been able to do drama lessons at school for the past 2 years but i absoloutely live to act. I was wondering what i should do when i leave school. Should i take drama at college or go to a performing arts school? Are there any in or around London/ Surrey for over 16s? Is it too late because I didn't go to stage school? Also I'm shy in real life but when I act I'm not because I obviously become the character but would being shy hold me back? Is there any ways can practice on by own? Thanks so much and sorry for the long question LOL! X

theatre doc is wrong with one thing you didn't "mess up" by not taking drama in HS i didn't either and my jr year i tried out for my first play with a community theatre in my town and got an understudy for a lead then this year i tried out for a professional company and got a supporting role in a regional premiere show. so yeah. its totally fine that you're shy in real life, in fact a alot of famous actors are. acting allows them to be other people and thats why they are great at it. i would reccomend taking acting classes and finding a monologue also try to get into a program in college!!! good luck to you!!!! btw 15 is so young to be graduating high school! holy smokes!

Purple, get into any school you can and play that dream. Im alot older than you and Im still trying things.LOL..For now Im standing behind the camera instead of in front of it.

You have really messed up by not taking drama at high school. You should try to get into a college with a good drama program. Guildhall is great if you can qualify. There are tons of acting academies in London. Do a web search of that topic. Let me know what you find that you are interested in and I will let you know if I think it is worth the money. You could also get into some amateur theatre groups and do some plays.
It would help you get over being shy. There is no way to practice acting by oneself, but you could be preparing the monologues you will need to audition. Read my profile and write to me at my aol address there in and I will help you.

Here is some advice about that:

Hey! I'm a 14 year old actress who has had 6 professional acting jobs, and countless amateur ones! My trick (I wouldn't get the jobs I do if I didn't know this) is to look at who you are in the play, make up an entire life story for them (even if it is a minor character or a walk-on!) and, for the week before the play become that character. Eat what they like, drink what they drink, speak like they speak, and dream their dreams. Become them. Also, practice in front of a mirror, work on dictation, and practice expressions. Head shots are a must, btw.

I agree with resume building- before my big break (Che's Mistress in Evita, 2 years ago) I had done so many minor parts, just things like "rain dancer 2" or "fairy 8". But they gave me experience. Also, years of music and dance (guitar, clarinet, piano, voice, tap, jazz, hip-hop, ballet, interpretive dance, and aerobics like yoga and palates) really help your resume look fabulous. Be out of the norm- not the typical, but not too weird either. And be yourself, and sincerely you. Best of luck, break a leg!

Goodluck!

You sound very brave to me. You need to follow your dreams-I know it sounds cheesy but it's true. You're obviously determined to be asking your question but remember it is a very tough industry so you've gotta learn to deal with rejection and not take it to heart.

There are lots of stage schools. One that I know is called TheatreCats and can be found on the web but it's in the Midlands.

Hope this helps
