Question Home

Position:Home>Theater & Acting> I'm an 18 year old alto needing a musical audition song. Can anyone give sug

Question:I've seen a few of these questions and sorry to those of you who are sick of them.. But I really need to start looking up songs around my age to get back into my auditions. I haven't been in a musical in almost a year and its killing me. In case this matters at all, I really like Wicked, Annie, The Sound of Music, Wizard of Oz, Les Miserables, Seussical and Once Upon a Mattress. I was considering a few songs from Annie Get Your Gun but I can't find much else. I did On My Own and Many a New Day for vocal lessons too... Maybe those? Does anyone have any other ideas for me? I'd really appreciate it! :)

There are Worst Things I can do, from Grease is a great song for an alto your age. Also have you heard of Songs For a New World? It s a musical that also has a few good alto songs such as " Just one step" and even tho the song " I met a Man" is a soprano, it's pretty easy for an alto to do. On my own is a great song but I think it os over done (i myself have used it many times). Any Caberet songs are great and " Out Tonight" from rent is a nice fresh one.

I have many more, just ask

Are you Femal? If so, I'd say do something from Chicago. 'All That Jazz' has both Soft vocals, and and really gut busting loud ones. It'll show that you have great vocal abilities, and lets face it, it's sexy. But, you also have to know who your auditioning for. I had a man that I auditioned for that only took people that Auditioned with Baptist hymnals. So, have a few things prepared, just in case. you never know who your going to have to impress. :) Break a Leg! :)

Hit the area music stores and book stores and look through the scores they sell. You're going to need the sheet music for the accompaniest anyway.

I still say one of the most solid series you can look at for audition pieces is "The Singer Musical Theatre Anthology". The books are sorted by voice and there are entire books for alto performance, mezzo soprano, baritone etc. I see they can even be purchased with a CD now. Wish they'd had that back when I was taking voice.
