The advice I've been given is this: if you really want to be an actress, major in something else, but don't do it so you have a backup. Then you'll spend 40 years do something you hate that's more practical until you wake up and realize you wasted your youth when you could have been out acting, which is what you love. But casting directors have told me that they don't really like theatre majors because they're "not too smart". And that any other degree makes people more interesting to talk to. Now that's what I've heard from others in high places.
My personal opinion is to listen to what I said at the top, but at the same time, I'm thinking about having a backup as well. Just pick something as a backup that you really like to do, but not something that takes forever like medical school. Or you could always minor in education and be a drama/choir teacher as a backup. Good luck!
