Position:Home>Theater & Acting> What is the overarching theme of Macbeth?

Question:A dominant theme is of the corrupting power of ambition.

At the start of the play Macbeth is a corageous lord who would not consider foulplay in anyway, yet still strives to obtain power and advances in his rankings.

Pushed by his wife, Macbeth turns into a man driven by an overwhelming ambition to conquer- and towards the end shows how mad this has made him.
Lady Macbeth on the other hand cannot cope with the consequences of her ambitions to push her husband to the top, and this results in her untimely death.

This ambition once fuelled is very difficult to stop, and Macbeth shows us this as the couple grow more and more out of control. Many other characters are killed in Macbeths attempt to keep the throne, and this corrupting power leads to his demise at the end of the play.
