"Actors were not considered to be respectable. They were considered to be generally to be rogues and scoundrels, drunkards and desolute vagabonds who traveled from town to town to perform. They were considered to be a threat to local law and order. There were regulations enacted to license and regulate the acting troupes sponsored by the aristocracy. Plays were regulated and subject to censorship to be sure that they did not contain language or situations that would be seen as going against the political or religious views of the country."
