by todays standards yes!
If you read the script, she comes across as a very modern woman infuriated by the attitudes towards women in the world she lives in. If a modern woman had to endure the things women of Shakespeare's times did, they would also be a little shrewish; no career, no choice of husband, no personal fortune etc...
Kate is actually, very intelligent, extremely witty, strong natured, self confident and perceptive.

She thinks for herself and wants to be independent.

It's the classic battle of the sexes, and what isn't lively, appealing, exciting, funny, earnest, endearing and lusty about that? I saw Meryl Streep do it in New York, and her charm and humor alone, to say nothing of the athleticism, made everyone adore her. She has real spunk. They are CRAZY about each other. She is a powerhouse of 100% woman. Your name is Kate do I hear? he says. They call me Katherine that do talk of me, she spits back. How could you not love her? They are one of the hottest couple ever invented. It's like watching two magnificent animals strutting their stuff. How can that not be admirable and immensely entertaining.
