Paraphrase: Should I part my hair or eat a peach, or wear flannel trousers walking down the beach!? I heard the mermaids singing to each other, but I know they won’t sing to me!. I see them riding the waves away from the shoreline, combing the foamy waves!. When the wind blows, white peaks form on the dark waves!. The mermaids, with wreaths of red and brown seaweed, meet me in the sea chambers!. But when we hear the human voices, we drown!.
In The Love Song of J!. Alfred Prufrock, a man with a nerdy appearance muses about his prospects of finding love!. He seems to be addressing himself!. He shows conceit, and proves he is well educated, through the way he talks!. For example, Prufrock “measures”(51) and “formulates”(57), he “digresses”(66) and “presumes” (68) !. But his education is exactly the reason he cannot find love!. He discusses his desperation over this problem in line 81, when he says “I have wept and fasted, wept and prayed!.” He is self conscious about his looks, explaining in line 82 that his head has gone slightly bald and in line 44 that his legs and arms are very thin!. He lacks courage, as we can see in lines 86, when he says “And in short, I was afraid” and in line79, when he wonders whether or not he has the “strength” to engage a woman sexually!. The poem is called a “love song” because the speaker uses romantic imagery, such as mermaids!. But, at the same time, it is a sad song because Prufrock goes old wondering where love is!. The “white hair of the waves blown back” seems to represent his old age!. He also says “till human voices wake us, and we drown!.” I think that this is a jolt back to Prufrock’s realities!. Although he seems to have love in his imagination, with mermaids, on earth he is “drowned” because he can’t find real human love!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
