Question: Does it really matter what language poetry is written in!?
!.!.in order to get the message across!?

(Inspired by a recent question/poem by Robert "Aussie Bob" Harrison)

Common Aussie c’mon, c’mon…
by Jellz Fisher 081121

They say that speaking English
Is the world-wide language choice
But me, I think that’s boring
I wanna have a choice
I’d rather speak Swahili
Or “wrap my laughing gear”
Round the stuff we speak in Aussieland
(We don’t just blame the beer)

“Stone the crows” and “strike a light”
or “Blow me down” is fine
Cos when I want to sound surprised
Just give me good old “Strine”

Rounded vowels fly out the door
Some endings dropped as well
It sounds a bit peculiar
The Yanks and Poms will tell
We speak a form of Eng-a-lish
“You bewdy”, “maaate” “my oath”
“It’s 6 of one, half doz the other”
Bad luck, can’t have them both

Henry Lawson, Banjo P
Most “Austrayans” know a line
A legacy of poetry,
Occasionally used Strine

Get used to it, how slow we talk
“Dead straight” and to the point
Tom Cruise comes off as second best to
Mum’s Sunday lamb leg joint
It’s Aussie vibe, laid back, but real
Down Under’s where it’s at
If you visit here but don’t enjoy
Someone will “eat my hat”

Travel where you wanna go
I’ll wait right here, it’s fine
You’re welcome at my “Habitual Abode”
If you need a dose of Strine
