Question: Do you 'get' the point this poem is trying to make!?
South Mississippi Retardation Center
Wards of the state
abandoned by parents
my students resided
in cottages by level
Cottage One housed
the highest functioning
Cottage Eight, the most severe
Down's syndrome
trisomy 21
spina bifida
birth defects
brain damage from
accidents, some
were from beatings
Days well spent with
sloppy kisses
spontaneous laughter
constant drool
full bodied hugs
broken intellects
with giving hearts
At end of work day
I returned to the land
of those articulate
college degreed, the
culturally elite
sophisticated ones
who did not drool
but had closed
cold hearts!.
That's okay,
God knew!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I think I do!. These children and adults too, perhaps, with mental illnesses and brain damage have managed to do what us with fully-functional brains can't- open our hearts and be loving and generous!. What's our excuse!? Www@QuestionHome@Com
yeah, it's talking about how the author goes to/works at a place where people with disabilities live!. It talks about how the rest of the world has abandoned them because they think they are not as good but in the end god knows the truth about who is really a better people!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
