First, let's take a look at this one leaf from "Leaves of Grass!."

"I sit and look out upon all the sorrows of the world, and upon all
oppression and shame;
I hear secret convulsive sobs from young men, at anguish with
themselves, remorseful after deeds done;
I see, in low life, the mother misused by her children, dying,
neglected, gaunt, desperate;
I see the wife misused by her husband—I see the treacherous seducer
of young women;
I mark the ranklings of jealousy and unrequited love, attempted to be
hid—I see these sights on the earth;
I see the workings of battle, pestilence, tyranny—I see martyrs and
prisoners;
I observe a famine at sea—I observe the sailors casting lots who
shall be kill’d, to preserve the lives of the rest;
I observe the slights and degradations cast by arrogant persons upon
laborers, the poor, and upon negroes, and the like;
All these—All the meanness and agony without end, I sitting, look out
upon,
See, hear, and am silent!."

There is one big literary device in this poem!. It is the rolling, impassioned cadence of epic free verse in the manner of the ancient Greeks!. There is an anger and indignity in it that penetrates the reader's mind and enlists his sympathies for all the oppressions and injustices described!. It depends on no similes or metaphors or other obvious literary devices to gain entrance to the mind!. In fact, it avoids them just for the purpose of seeming too serious for frilly language!. It is a strong mature voice talking to the deep sense of equality and common humanity in us!.

But does he really only sit and listen and remain silent about what he sees!? Of course not!. The poem is the proof!. In fact, he is goading us by making us think that mayve we are sitting by while these things are happening!. It does what he intends!. It makes us recoil at what he has observed and appeals stongly to our inner sense of justice!. For the moment at least, and maybe longer, we are enlisted in his cause against injustice and oppression!.
