Question: How many of these terms are new to you and me, especially that French one!?
Basics of English Studies 4!.2!. Types of Poetry

When studying poetry, it is useful first of all to consider the theme and the overall development of the theme in the poem (see ch!. 1!.5!.)!. Obviously, the sort of development that takes place depends to a considerable extent on the type of poem one is dealing with!. It is useful to keep two general distinctions in mind (for more detailed definitions consult Abrams 1999 and Preminger et al 1993): lyric poetry and narrative poetry!.

Key items:

lyric poetry
elegy
ode
sonnet
dramatic monologue
occasional poetry
epic
mock-epic
ballad
descriptive poetry
dramatic poetry
didactic poetry
prodesse et delectare

EDITI: I didn't see the Lady's answer before I posted!. You better not mess with us French gals!. The goal of poetry: prodesse et delectare--to teach and delight!. I think the language has changed since Horace in the 13th Century; it is probably Middle Latin/Italian!. (My linguistics prof is now turning over in his grave)!Www@QuestionHome@Com

What French thing, you peasants!?

EDIT: Latin, it's from Horace (if I am not mistaken)!. The aim of poetry is to instruct and please; you cannot separate one from the other!.

EDIT2: there is definitely something in common between Elaine and I!. Must be the Paris air!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I recognize all but a few!. However; I have come to see that recognizing a word does not equate to understanding what it actually represents!. As in, while I recognize the word ballad - were I to write one I would not know to call it one!. Hmpft!. Guess where I'm headed!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Lyric, ode and ballad were all I knew,
the rest I'll leave to the serious poets,
they will use them well!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
