Gone Away
Awakened by a sound, so quiet
A tapping on the floor
Another sound, still so quiet
The knob is turning on the door
I sit up straight and watch it open
She stands there full of fear
I whisper to her soft and slowly
“It’s okay Hun, Mommy’s here”
She takes off running, ever so swiftly
Tiny feet pattering ‘cross the floor
I lift her up and hold her tightly
The emotion hits me to the core
I sit with her amidst the silence
And wait for her to speak
It will be the same phrase she has uttered
Every night the last two weeks
“Mommy, when’s Daddy coming home
I sure do miss him so
I miss his kiss, his big bear hugs
I felt he’d never let me go!.
He’d hold me close and make me giggle
He’d always make me smile!.
Mommy where is Daddy
Will he be home after while!?”
