Since you "seek after truth", I'll answer your question: The best way to learn to write poetry is to first read, then analyze, then write!. You learn how to paint by looking at someone else's painting, then by studying the style, the media, the techniques, then by trying to imitate!. Once you can write in that style, you try another, and another, and yet another!. What you'll find is that as you study, analyze, and write, you'll find a style you like best and end up writing more along those lines than the others!. Just as a good artist can usually create art in many styles using a variety of media, so too can good poets write in a variety of styles!. Ultimately, you'll find your voice, your own style, etc!. However, in the beginning, if you really want to become a better poet, it's best to eat the elephant one spoonful at a time!. Pick up a copy of the Norton's Anthology of poetry, open it to page one and go from there!. Pick up books on poetry analysis, writing, and books on specific styles, like Haiku, etc!. Poetry is a way of life, not the end of a journey!. The more you read, the more you analyze, and the more you write, the more differently you look at the world!. You start to see connections, create metaphors in your nomal speech, etc!. You see actions that relate to things unique to your perspective, because you've trained your mind to think in different terms, in less literal terms!.!.!.which sets prose apart from poetry!. Anyone can write "poetry", but if you want to learn how to write "good" poetry, you'll find it's a never ending study, but a very rewarding journey!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

As I've said before, when you ask a question you usually supply the answer right along with it!. All the permutations you mention are part of the process, but chiefly, one also needs to have the gift; that spark of poetic aspiration which can be fanned into a flame!. When all these ingredients are in place, good poetry is usually the result!. How do we best learn to write poetry!? Well, following your example is a good start!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

You wait until you and your emotions are all bottled up then you just spew them on a piece of paper!. Then, after wards, you show it to your mom, or your girlfriend, or anybody you can trust not to hurt your feelings!. If they say it's no good you tell them "poetry" doesn't have to be!. Step 2: repeat!.
