One of the best tips is to build your poem using imagery, and keep abstraction to a minimum!. Images are things you can see, smell, hear, touch, or taste (apples, birdsong, muffins)!. Abstractions are things you can't see, smell, hear, touch, or taste (love, freedom, truth)!. If you use images, you're letting the reader experience what you do, which draws them further into the poem!. If your poem involves a French restaurant, a bouquet of flowers, and red wine, the reader can figure out it's a love poem even if you never say 'love' in the poem!. If you use the image of a tombstone then the reader knows it's a poem about a death even if you never mention the abstractions 'sadness,' 'loneliness,' or 'death!.'

Another is avoid cliches!. Saying your love is a red rose has been done thousands of times!. If your love is special, come up with a new, special image for it (love as a blueberry muffin, for example)!.

Here's one more tip: don't worry about rhyme!. Rhyme can be great, but it often trips up people new to writing poetry!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

write from your heart, i find that if poems don't rhyme they are more emotional and just better (unless your a little kid)!. poems tell a story, you don't have to have stanzas, it can be long and continuous, not short!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
