Question: Would you care to comment on this, a sweet slice of life!?
My Grandparents
by C!.S!. Scotkin

My Mom is part of what is now called a blended family!. She was the youngest of four kids!. Her father died when she was only two!. My grandmother remarried a couple of years later and soon there four more children!.

Mom and her siblings were never legally adopted by their step father!. They used the name of their biological father, and their stepfather was “Dad”!. When this large brood of children grew up, producing their own crops of kids, he was “Grampa!.”

I seldom heard him raise his voice!. I only saw him furious once!. It was the day his first biological grandchild was born!. An old friend asked him how it felt to finally be a grandfather!. Grampa froze the fool with a stare and dropped my hand to take the ever present stogie out his mouth!.

“What the hell are you talking about, this is number eight!”

He never spoke to that person again!.

My remarkable grandparents celebrated their 25th Wedding Anniversary in 1958!.
We were all excited because the local TV station was going to interview them for the noon day “Human Interest” segment they did in those days!. We all watched from home
with great anticipation!. The interviewer was a young man, who asked the usual questions,

“Where do you work, sir!?”

“I work for the local electric company, and I head up the local Democratic Party”

“And what do you do, ma’m!?

“I’m the Superintendent of the Episcopal Church Sunday School and I’m the head of the Altar Guild!.”

“How many children do you have!?”

“Eight”

“Isn’t that grand! And how old is the eldest!?”

“40” my grandfather proclaimed proudly!

The station broke for commercials suddenly, as we all dissolved into shrieks of laughter!

This is excellent!. It reminds me of the man I called Grampa, my grandmother's third husband!. He treated me, my brother, and our dozen cousins as his own!. I never knew a kinder or gentler man, even though he could not write his own name!. He taught me what it was to be a man!.

[ The punchline was on their 25th Anniversary Grampa poudly said their eldest child was 40 on TV, born 15 years before they were married!. We understand and agree with him, but literalists would be scandalized!. Both my wife's and my fathers died when we were very young, so in each parish I served we adopted grandfathers for our girls!. That influence is very important, I credit it in part for the wonderful men they married!.]Www@QuestionHome@Com

An excellent snapshot of how short pieces can have a very big impact!.
Although I can't help but wonder what this would look like if it was made into a sort of "mini-epic" poetic piece!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

As a product myself of a blended family, this is great!. Your grandfather sounds like my dad!. My brothers and sister wouldn't dare put step or half in front of our titles!. Some would say that my father didn't have any grandchildren!.!.!.but all of us beg to differ!. He died with ten children, 10 grand-children, and two great grandchildren!.

Don't tell my mother this, but I call his second wife "mom" as well!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

CS - may I humbly ask!.!.!.what is funny about this!? Truly, I don't get the punch line!. I've got four children, and asked that question I would say '34' - I don't get it!.

This has made me so envious!. I had no grandparents!.!.!.only met my grandmother once before she died and I was too young to remember it!.
My grandfather was already dead, and I never met any of my Dad's family!. Some of my mother's 10 sibilings and spouses and off-spring I did meet about six or seven times in my life!.!.!.but have no contact now!.
Sad isn't it!? To me family is everything!. My husband is a wonderful grandad!.!.it starts here!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
