Question: When did poetry really dig in it's heels in America and become a recognized art!? Or has it, yet!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Poetry has never been in the mainstream of American consciousness!. Students are forced to study poetry and the majority of them hate it!. They see no use for it and is true, we are a materialistic society!. Few people get rich from writing poetry!. In France, however, poetry has always been part of the life of the people!. Even back in the 13th Century, poets became famous there!.

It's a shame; if taught correctly, Americans would learn how real poetry can enrich their lives!.

Edgar A!. Poe was scathing as a critic of American poetry while he lived in France where he was lionized!. We've had Poet laureates, but the general populace seems to scorn poetry, and it is a mere sideline in our schools!. It seems almost to be an art everyone loves to hate, yet some of us have taken to digging in our heels!. There have been greats of American poetry like Whitman, Frost, Sandburg, Millay, Angelou, Ameer Baraka, Hughes, and countless others from before the start of our country up until the persent moment, but most schoolkids would be hard put to quote a poem by one!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

poetry in America has had some shining moments to be sure!. Has it become a recognized art form in America !? I honestly do not believe it has!. Far too many folks believe poetry to be the voice of the die hard irrational romantics and the squirrel brained who have nothing better to do with their time!.

sad!.
