The lake watched in horror
the white patches of mouth
swerved on the surface
deliberate and deadly
desperate mother
dead-eye dad
!.22 pistol cracks
blue snake blood
little boy dock-side
kicking water

I've seen what you've described - in movies!. Dad's wearing suspenders, boy's got freckles and mom's in one of those floral cotton dresses holding a smaller baby in her arms!.

A loooooooong time ago when I was a kid, I have seen these unwanted
critters in a lake, My brother killed many at the time!. Once the area became populated, and the water plant life along the shore disappeared
Speed boats increased in number etc!. the snakes were no longer!.
and I among others were thankful the snakes were gone!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I llived in Gulfport, MS when one decided to wedge itself in the space between screen door and door!. In the morning, I opened the door, half asleep, saw it, thought it was a toy the dog had left there, bent down to pick it up and throw it out!.!.!.!.!.and it sprung up in a coil at me!.

Great poem, I've never had a cotton mouth come for me, but when I lived in Louisiana I had an 8ft rattler visit on my patio for the afternoon after a flooding storm!. Animal services come to get him and get him back to the bayou!

I'm from the South and I know just what you're talking about!. I had a similar experience at my grandfather's pond!. A moccasin came after my father and myself as if it was going to attack us and my father had his pistol with him and shot it!. We were on the bank!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

I have seen many cotton mouth water moccasins and copper head snakes here in the south!. Yes, they are poisonous and a 22 is good to have around in case one comes at you!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
