Question: Any idea on what this means!?
Hello everyone,
I have a short poem, not really sure if I get the whole picture

The Fist
by Derek Walcott

The fist clenched round my heart
loosens a little, and I gasp
brightness; but it tightens
again!. When have I ever not loved
the pain of love!? But this has moved

past love to mania!. This has the strong
clench of the madman, this is
gripping the ledge of unreason, before
plunging howling into the abyss!.

Hold hard then, heart!. This way at least you live!.

So!.!.!.any ideas!?

Thanks everybodyWww@QuestionHome@Com

this seems to be a poem relating to obsession with love!.
"the fist" here signifies the love that is being experienced by the person!.

"When have I ever not loved
the pain of love!? But this has moved
past love to mania!."
the above verse states that the person has always liked the feeling of being in love!.!.!.!.!.but in the present state he feels that he feels he is too happy , the underlying reason being depression (a characteristic of mania)

"This has the strong
clench of the madman, this is
gripping the ledge of unreason, before
plunging howling into the abyss!."
the clench of love , he feels, is too strong now and he feels it is unreasonable!. he feels he should get out of this state before he will not be able to recover from it ( "!.!.!.plunging howling into the abyss")
