Question: What is Poetry!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!?
From: "Basics of English Studies" Lethbridge/Mildorf!.

An English textbook from a German University!.

"To ask 'What is poetry!?' is very much like asking 'What is literature!?' and in fact the answer to both these questions overlap: Poetry is perceived as fictional, it uses specialized language, in many cases it lacks a pragmatic function, it is also ambiguous (see Basic Concepts ch!. 1!.2)!."

Poetry is in all dialects the language of the spirit, sometimes alluded to as speaking in tongues!. Whether eastern poetry or western this beautiful language stands in danger of being eroded!. It is a spiritual phenomena, the communiqué of the soul!. We note how in anger we speak harsh words with intent to wound the offending person, when given to stress induced toxic state of fury it is reflected in our speech, anger manifest in vulgarisms and profanity!. Thus at the other extreme the condition of peace and love invoke poetic speech and prose like recitations of ordinate words!. Such is the importance of speech to mans emotional well being!.

The power of linguistics or word power is underestimated, laziness and a yob culture gives credence to slang at the expense of proper speech and grammar in all societies across the globe!. We witness how the demise of a refined culture exhibits itself in a lack of propriety in speech in some extreme cases, America being the worst culprit!.

I agree that the definition of poetry as such certainly will overlap with that of literature, save for specialized use of language and rhyming (not necessarily)!. However, as I was pondering about poetry and its value (as compared to a prose or for that matter a song) I felt, poetry is more personal and isnt necessarily composed with an audience or a readership in mind!. Feel free to critique my stance!.
