Question: What is he trying to say, the message, in the following poem!?
Thing Language

This ocean, humiliating in its disguises
Tougher than anything!.
No one listens to poetry!. The ocean
Does not mean to be listened to!. A drop
Or crash of water!. It means
Nothing!.
It
Is bread and butter
Pepper and salt!. The death
That young men hope for!. Aimlessly
It pounds the shore!. White and aimless signals!. No
One listens to poetry!.

It's okay, but doesn't really make sense to me!. The ocean makes a lot of sound and people like poetry!. I guess I'm just dense on this one here!. ?Www@QuestionHome@Com

I heard the shingle shuffling of the beach, back and forth, back and forth, reflected in the rhythm of his lines!. He was sitting on the beach just listening to the waves of the ocean that doesn't care whether we listen or not and was struck by the sense of waves of poetry crashing against the consciousness of the world - and no-one listens: in the same way no-one really listens to what the waves say!.
I can hear the waves now!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

For me, I take this one at face value!. He's saying, "Poetry is the Ocean!."

It is the ocean that nobody listens to anymore!. It is as basic as bread and butter, pepper and salt, self awareness!.

He names poetry again at the end, doubling the idea!.

I think he means for us to see a printed page with the line, "White and aimless signals!."

These are the visions in my mind!. Poetry draws something different in every person!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Using the ocean as an example, he seems to be saying that we attribute characteristics or romantic/metaphorical notions to inanimate things (which, in fact, they don't have) or try to give them a meaning (when they have no meaning other than just existence or physical function)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Well obviously in simplest form it's about How not many people appreciate poetry And if poetry is life then for me
it is about not appreciating life enough and as You rightly said We too often take our lives for Granted
Be thankful for what you have is the moral I am sure
for Know that there are others out there more troubled than youWww@QuestionHome@Com

I believe he is talking bout himself!. It's like a simile or metaphor, without the like or as, ETC!. No one understand him or listens to him, and the poem has almost a dreary tone to it which is showing me his impatience!. Www@QuestionHome@Com

He is wrong!. Poetry is an ocean!. We are bringing it back into the mainstream!. Before people could read, poetry was a teaching device!. The Internet has revived poetry!. "This is a new day and a new time!."Www@QuestionHome@Com

I read priorities in the wrong place!. Poetry has something to say; the ocean exists because it is the ocean, nothing more!. Interesting comparison!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

It talks of monotony and sameness the striving to be a different an individual in his own world ~~Www@QuestionHome@Com

The ocean itself is a poem that is so simple,
yet we can not understand it!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

!.!.!.perhaps the futile acquisitions of material wealth over the meaning of life itself!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

it came to me as he worked on a boat and tired of the sound!. he wanted more out of his life than hearing the water!. just my opinionWww@QuestionHome@Com

a society hes not comfort with or just a poetic moment in front of the sea !?Www@QuestionHome@Com

Perhaps he speaks of himself!. That nobody listens to what he has to say!.!.!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

then i thought!.!.!.!.!.!.

The ocean, like poetry, has value in itself!. It need not be listened to in order to be appreciated (though some may appreciate its sound)!. The poet was feeling a bit disillusioned, however, and compared these 2 under-appreciated things by claiming that they were meaningless (when, in fact, the truth is quite the opposite)!. Yet he also compares them to bread and butter (basic foods), and pepper and salt (spices used to enhance flavor)!. Life and death is far from meaningless, even to most of those who are jaded!. Both the ocean and poetry may be taken for granted by most, but to others they are quite powerful!.

"The ocean is a desert with its life underground
And the perfect disguise above"
-America, "Horse With No Name"

Edit: The poet is wrong -EVERYONE listens to poetry (but like the ocean, poetry has found the perfect disguise -music)!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
