Question: This is just a bit of a verse in memory of my mum!.!. would you like to read!?
Mama sat on her bed
Legs crossed, Indian style
Staring, catatonic gaze
At the window
The oblivion beyond
standing beside her bed
I observed
Bills to pay
Surrounding her
As I attempted
To attract her attention
To no avail
Her stare was unbroken
Her mind wiped clear
Had removed herself
Momentarily
In a trance like state
From the present
***************
Seven children
One more on the way
Juggling bills
Borrow from Peter to pay Paul
Another mouth to feed
Cheaper by the dozen
Meals were ample
Yet sparse
Potatoes a mainstay
Sometimes
The only attention
We received
Was negative in nature
Unwanted,
Sometimes Unwarranted
**********
Every weekend
I would make bread
From the time I was 10
Until the day I left
At the age of 14
Going away
To a boarding school
In the country
Where I would learn
What it was to grow up
And forge friendships
With my classmates
And companions
That would last me
My lifetime
***********

Mama’s life
Was not simple
Oldest child of three
Born to a Norwegian
Fisher man
And a seamstress
She developed polio
Before she was a teen
Defeating that monster
Losing a muscle to it
But she persevered
Became a nurse
Got married
Had kids
And never knew
What we needed
Was more time
More positive attention
Until we were
Grown up
With children
Of our own
*******
I am proud
To be her daughter
And I only wish
That I could have
Known her
Much better
Before she was gone!.
