Question: Do you think it's going to be a "Long Winter"!?
Long Winter
First winter's snow fell last night
with it came riveting news
son's dreaded call chilled my bones
far more than new fallen snow
Morning sun did find its way
penetrating chill lingered on
fire burning under mantle of stone
offered no welcoming warmth
More bad news came into my life
another child now drowns in despair
husband ordered to Afghanistan
four children he leaves in her care
Forecast calls for a long, hard winter
it's said trusted almanac rarely errs
no book to inform did this mother need
what her heart had already confirmed!.

The "coldest" winter of my life was after my father died one October!. The temperatures that winter were higher than in the preceding and succeeding years, and the snowfall totals were lower -yet I never felt the bite of the cold as much as I did that winter!. Www@QuestionHome@Com
Phones and almanacs are conduits for knowledge!. We can avoid using them so we learn none of the bad news, but to do so would also keep the good news from getting through!. They carry both!. Mothers know intuitively anyway, as you rightly say, when changes are about to occur!. They cannot stop the change despite their longing to do so!. Some things are out of our control!. We can't change the weather, but we can get ready for it!. Look for comfort and hope!.

Yes, tis words no one wants to hear!. Army, Navy, Air force, they all have heard the call!. The almanac was wrong for us last winter, said it would be dry, we had more snow then we've had in 15 years!. Our family, we spent 15 months taking care of my nieces babies while her and her husband both were in Iraq!. January brought them home again - He now goes to Afghanistan!. You'll be in my thoughts and prayers ma, and if it is a long cold winter, I am ready!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
Reaching for the phone, I had no idea, it was plugged into the electric outlet!. Shocked and scarred, phone falls to the floor, screaming for mercy, I hear the ring of the door!.
Dragging myself to answer, sure nothing could be more shocking that the now I was in, I opened up and was taken aback!. To my knees in prayer like pose, I saw!. The arms of a world reaching!.!.!.lifting!.!.!.!.pulling me to my feet!. Releasing me on warm wings, aloft to golden skies!.

Ma, take comfort from the thought that so many go to Afghanistan and return safely to the fold!. The anxiety you feel won't lessen I know, but you have the strength to battle on!.
