Who are your friends!?
At night I dream I slip
up into the trees
and blend between the leaves
until
a solitary owl finds me!.
Who are your friends!?
I fly beside him
on his hunting raids
against caravans
of fleeing mice and
long parades
of snuffling groundhogs!.
Who are your friends!?
And when we return
to the safety of the branches
far far above
we eat in silence
tearing at the flesh
and throwing up the bones!.
Who are your friends!?
In the morning
at the breakfast table
I look across at you
and smile
and you smile in return
as if you've been there
all along!.
