Question: How to read and write poetry well!?
I'm going over poetry in English class, and its like the only thing I suck at in English!. How do I get better at this!?

Could you tell me how to write great poems without having to think so hard (even then it sucks)!?

And could you tell me how to analyze a poem easily!? I can't do this too well!.

I think it has to do with me not being an abstract thinker!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

The trick is NOT to think about it!.

since poetry is emotions, you can write whatever, but I find that for reading purposes, break up the lines (I prefer blank verse)

Allow me to demonstrate

"I see you
Standing there

Alone

Are you alone like me!?

The vast void is scary!.

I have to believe that there is some one who can
fill that void,
to quell those fear
To quiet my soul!.

can you
be that person

Please!?"

Nowe, I personally think that poetry sucks, so I invest as little time in it as I can!. This poem did not exist five minutes ago and it took me five minutes to write it downWww@QuestionHome@Com

there are alot of excersizes you could do
some simple ones are take a piece of paper and write every word that comes to your mind take like ten minutes to do so when your finished look at what you wrote and pick all the words that you think describe you when you get a list of ten or so words just turn them into sentances!. You can replace describing you by describing whatever it is you want to write about and use this excersize to write about anything!.
If you are looking at ways to analyze poems you would have to learn the many different kinds and formats but there are basics you could learn too!. Analyzing a poem is NOT an easy thing to do there is no easy way about it you either just understand emotions of words or you dont i dont know!. But you can just learn about poetry in general and it would help!.

Write down ideas on a scrap piece of paper!. Phrases, images that come to mind, etc!. Use your senses!. Then arrange it in poem form and try to use good descriptive words!. Having a thesaurus handy will help!. Maybe try saying the line aloud, and go with it if you like how it sounds, if not, try changing some of the words!.

If you need inspiration, listen to some orchestral music!.!.!. no lyrics to influence your writing, because it should be your own work!.

Being able to analyze a poem well comes from practice!. If you are exposed to poems constantly, you'll see patterns, recognize styles, etc!. Try more poetry, then maybe you'll get better!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Sounds like you haven't found a poem you can relate to!. I don't know what your teacher is making you read, but, perhaps you can turn to modern poets!. Not knowing you, I can't make suggestions!.
You want to write a GREAT poem-how about just learning to write a poem!? A good poem has idea, image, language!.
To analyze a poem you must just try to enjoy it!. What part speaks to you!? Read it aloud numerous times, and then just mull it over!. It's not like math!.
There are many wonderful books out about writing poetry-you might want to look them over!.
Good Luck!Www@QuestionHome@Com

I am a wordsmith and love poetry and language!. The thing is, I can't ever remember learning these things; I just had the passion in me!.

I suspect that these are the ingredients that you are lacking!. You have no passion or feel for it and that is why you struggle with it!.

Unfortunately you can't learn this stuff, you either get it or you don't!.

Sorry to sound harsh but it's the truth!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
