A Warning to Our Neighbors

If li'l green men from planet Mars
With eyes that grow upon a stalk
Could drive to Earth in compact cars
If only but to have a talk
What would they say!? What would we know
Of life's great mysteries untold!?
And if they asked us, would you go
And dine with them or join their fold!?
Or is it good and grander still
To call them alien and fear
The wee green men who wish us ill,
Who'll come and take what we hold dear!.
No olive branch could save mankind
If saving them still had some worth
If those green men made up their mind
To lay a claim to planet Earth!.
So if instead they choose to write
Pure doggerel and rancid verse
And we're safe for another night
I know that there are things far worse
Than poetry that never sings
That's distant, cool, and dry as dust
I'll read it, though with certain strings
Attached, if read their verse I must:
The verse must rhyme and chime a bit
And be allusive, rich and fine
And brim with humor, soul, and wit
But not as great in craft as mine!.
Defeat mankind, do what you may
But leave my ego or you'll pay!.!.!.
