The ferryman waved three fingers,
Three dollars for me and me ox,
To pay for this passage will lighten my purse,
But save me a week to Missouri!.

and set out across the wide river,
We pulled for an hour, fighting the power,
Finally making the bank!.

He held his hand out, for the bargained amount,
I counted the dollars, all three,
He shook his head no, said it was four,
Because I had forgotten the thumb…
