Question: I don't really want to call this a poem so what would you call it!. To me it's more of a story in stanza!. Is
there another name for it besides a poem!?

Pappy's Cane Stick
(just a story in stanza)

Walking on that old muddy river bank,
With eyes of blue that shone like light

Old Pappy was my best friend then,
Catchin!. fish, tellin tails, swappin grins!.

He had no teeth in that head of his,
Just them ole gums chewin' that 'bacca!.

He would plant a kiss on my suntanned, freckled cheek,
Then you couldn't tell the 'bacca juice from the freckles!.

But I didn't mind one bit in this whole world,
'Cause I love my Pappy way back in them days!.

He'd have a brown bag with him every day!.
I was always surprised to see what he had!.

Some days would be a can of spam and crackers,
The next it might be some worms and livers!.

I never, ever knew if he was gonna feed us,
or if he was just bring along the bait to use!.

One day Pappy had a cane stick in his hand!.
I ask him if it was for to kill them bad snakes!.

"Oh no" said Pappy, "We not gonna kill no snakes"!.
"This cane is for me, I done got much to old now"!.

I tell you Pappy wernt old, I couldn't let that be!.
Cause that meant I couldn't go fishin' no more!.

That meant I would be going to school and such!.
And I wernt about to start that nonsense!.

The time would never be just right for this tomboy
To ever grow up and become a lady someday!

But I did, I started to school, I became a lady,
we buried Pappy and I do miss him so!. I have
Pappy's old cane stick and plan to keep it
forever!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Very nice and I would call it a poem!. Free verse, in my opinion!. I can see the images you are painting!.

As a prose writer myself, I do enjoy good imagery, and you have that in this piece of work!.

A story poem!? Some great images and obviously very heart felt!. My critique would be choppy meter as I read!. It is always interesting how something simple like a "cane" can mean so much!. For me it's when I see bushy eyebrows on an older man, triggers immediate thoughts of my Grandfather!. Overall, I liked!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
